Riley's Pet Corner publishes research-driven buying guides for pet owners. We want to be transparent about exactly how our recommendations are made so you can judge them for yourself. Here is our process.
What our reviews are — and aren't
Our guides are editorial research reviews, not independent laboratory tests. We do not claim to have hands-on tested every product in every guide. Instead, each recommendation is based on a structured review of the evidence that is publicly verifiable — product specifications, certifications, ingredient and feature comparisons, manufacturer documentation, and the aggregated experience of real owners. Where we have direct hands-on experience with a product, we say so explicitly.
How we choose what to recommend
- Define the buyer. We start with who the product is for — a kitten vs. an adult cat, a beginner aquarium vs. a planted tank — because the "best" choice depends on the use case.
- Compare on objective criteria. For each category we fix the criteria that actually matter (e.g., for feed: life stage, protein and calcium levels, ingredient quality, value per pound) and compare candidates on those, not on marketing claims.
- Weigh real-world feedback. We read across owner reviews to surface recurring strengths and failure modes — durability, palatability, sizing, safety — rather than relying on any single review.
- Check safety and certifications first. Anything that fails a basic safety, recall, or certification check is excluded regardless of popularity.
- Pick for a reason. Every "best for X" pick names the specific situation it wins in. If we can't articulate why it's the right call, it doesn't make the list.
Accuracy and honesty
- We don't invent specifications, prices, or ratings. If a detail can't be verified, we describe it generally or leave it out.
- Any editorial rating we show reflects our own assessment against the criteria above — not aggregated customer star averages.
- We update guides as products, formulas, and availability change, and we date each update.
